Melanie’s Birth Story
When I found out I was pregnant, I was so happy but it didn’t take long for the anxiety of labour to arise. I was petrified at the thought of giving birth; I had heard so many women complaining about how much they suffered through a long and painful labour. I would think about the upcoming labour and I was far from feeling the excitement that I should be feeling to bring my baby to this world and finally meet him.
I met Silvana at a girlfriend Christmas party in 2010. She was thrilled that I was pregnant and we started chatting. I shared my fears of labour and she asked me if I ever hear about Hypo-Birthing – my answer was No, what’s that! She explain the principal that women are made to give birth and how we can use techniques to work with our body when in labour… 1 month later, my husband and I were starting the classes.
First of all, I have to say that going through the 5 sessions with Silvana really helped me build my confidence, strength and got me ready for labour. The joy of bringing my husband to these sessions made him feel like he could help me and definitely brought us closer together! Every night he would read me the affirmation and he would help me go in deep relaxation. I remember Silvana asking us what kind of labour we wanted – she wrote everything we said down on a piece of paper. Even thought I was skeptical of what would happen, ALL the things we had wrote down happened!
Let me share my wonderful birth experience:
My water broke at 3am and I felt excited and a bit anxious. That is where my husband reminded me that everything will be fine and that I was ready for it. I started having surges 30 minutes later. The surges rapidly became closer to one another and I started to feel a bit overwhelmed. I decided to take a bath to feel more relax and at every surges, Alex used acupressure to help with each surges. By 7:00am I told Alex I was ready to go to the hospital – Once we got there, the first thing I mentioned was that I didn’t want an epidural and that I didn’t want to know how far along I was...the first thing I hear was…”get her a room, she is at 8 cm”…I was quite happy! At each surge, I use my visualization of the rose and my breathing techniques. The nurses were so impressed to see how we were managing things and couldn’t believe it was my first labour. Throughout my labour I keep myself hydrated and I ate to keep my body strong –it helped a lot! I was even joking with the doctor that once I deliver, I want a big breakfast! At around 11:30am the doctor told me I was ready to push and 12:06pm, Adrian was born. He was very alert and I breastfed him right away – he latched on perfectly right away. I had minor tear and no complication – I recovered very fast!
Thank you Silvana, without you I would not have had the labour I wanted! You were a great support, education before and after Adrian was born. We couldn’t be more grateful!
